Manitoba launches disability income support program in 2024

People with disabilities in Manitoba will benefit from an income support program beginning January 1, 2023, Family Secretary Rochelle Squires announced in a press release earlier this week.

This program will be separate from general employment and income support programs, according to Squires, but will offer similar financial and health benefits.

Manitobans who participate in the program receive a $100 per month benefit increase, phone and laundry allowances, and then have the opportunity to earn up to $12,000 per year before benefits are impacted.

The basic needs amount will be indexed to inflation annually from April 2023, the statement said.

To begin this program, the Manitoba government passed Bill 72, Disability Support Act to Amend the Manitoba Attendance Benefits Act in October 2021.

Enrollment in the new income support program is a two-stage process.

Beginning January 1, 2023, Manitobans currently receiving disability class income support benefits may enroll. In this phase, people receive services from the organization Community life DISABLED services can also apply, and those receiving Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefit can enroll.

In April 2023, all other eligible Manitobans will be able to register.
