Today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Yukon Prime Minister Sandy Silver to discuss issues important to Yukoners and all Canadians. Minister for Northern Affairs, Minister for Canada’s Economic Development for the Plains and Minister for Canada’s Northern Economic Development Agency Dan Vandal and MP for Yukon Brendan Hanley were also present.
Premier Silver spoke of the productive discussions his ministers, Yukon First Nations chiefs and himself have had with federal ministers earlier this week in an annual series of trilateral meetings called “Yukon Days.” The Prime Ministers discussed the importance of access to quality healthcare and the modernization of healthcare system data. They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting reconciliation through meaningful partnerships with indigenous peoples in areas such as economic development and clean energy.
The Premiers emphasized the important role of Yukoners in developing critical minerals vital to Canada’s economic growth. They talked about related topics like infrastructure. Prime Minister Trudeau also highlighted today’s release of Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy, which will help create sustainable jobs in all regions of the country.
Prime Minister Trudeau thanked Premier Silver for his leadership as Prime Minister over the past six years and pledged to continue working with the Yukon government and future leaders after Prime Minister Silver’s term expires in 2024.
