Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with Caroline Cochrane, Prime Minister of the Northwest Territories

Today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Northwest Territories Premier Caroline Cochrane to discuss shared priorities. Also present were Minister for Northern Affairs, Minister for Canadian Economic Development for the Prairies and Minister for Canada’s Northern Economic Development Agency Dan Vandal, and MP for the Northwest Territories Michael V. McLeod.

The Prime Minister and Premier agreed on the importance of continued cooperation between the federal and territorial governments to encourage infrastructure development, expand access to affordable housing and support economic development opportunities by addressing the unique needs of the Northwest -Take account of territories. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of critical minerals to the North and to Canada’s economic growth. He highlighted Canada’s critical minerals strategy, released today.

The Prime Minister and Premier spoke of the importance of the Taltson Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Mackenzie Valley Highway Extension Project to the Territory. Leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to address climate change, improve clean energy opportunities in the North and advance the common task of reconciliation.

The prime minister and the premier said they look forward to further cooperation.
