Canada announced on Friday that it had imposed new sanctions targeting Iran under the Special Economic Measures Regulations.
This emerges from a press release published on the website of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“As the Iranian regime ramps up efforts to brutally repress protests taking place across the country, the Iranian people continue to stand up for the rights of Iranian women and girls and demand a better future for all Iranians,” the publication said.
“Canada will not stand idly by as the regime commits increasingly serious and widespread human rights abuses against the Iranian people,” the statement added.
“Therefore,” the statement continued, “we are imposing sanctions on 4 individuals and 5 other Iranian entities for their role in the regime’s gross and systematic human rights abuses and actions that continue to threaten peace and international security.”
The targets of these sanctions are Morteza Talaei, a senior member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Ali Ghanaatkar Mavardiani, a senior judge, and Hassan Karami, commander of Iran’s law enforcement special forces.
In addition, these sanctions affect Safiran Airport Services, “an Iranian commercial and cargo airline that coordinated Russian military flights between Iran and Russia, through which the Iranian regime transferred unmanned aerial vehicles to Russia, through Canadian diplomacy.
“These actions are the latest example of Canada’s response to the Iranian regime’s heinous behavior at home and abroad,” he added.
“Canada will continue to work with its international partners to counter the regime’s destabilizing actions and amplify the courageous voices of Iranians who refuse to be silenced,” the statement concluded.
