Office of Independent Investigations: Officer Shaelyn Yang cleared of any wrongdoing

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer Shaelyn Yang, who shot and stabbed a man during a dispute in Burnaby, will not be charged, the Bureau of Investigations for independent British Columbia has found.

The organization is responsible for reviewing the conduct of police operations where a person is seriously injured or killed.

According to Office of Independent Investigations civilian director Ronald J. MacDonald, the decision was made after reviewing available evidence, including videotapes and witness statements.

The file will therefore not be sent to the Crown for consideration of the indictment.

Shaelyn Yang, 31, a mental health specialist, was stabbed to death on October 18 while trying to deliver an eviction notice with a Burnaby city official to a man who was living in a tent in Broadview Park.

The policewoman used her firearm before she died.

Suspect Jongwon Ham underwent surgery at the hospital. He is charged with first-degree murder.
