(Greensboro) Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh continues to rewrite the record books.
The 16-year-old Toronto native eclipsed her Canadian record and junior world record in the individual 400-meter individual medley at the US Open on Friday.
McIntosh hit the wall in 4:28.61, the fourth fastest in the discipline’s history, lowering his own mark of 4:29.01 set at this summer’s Commonwealth Games. A month before the Commonwealth Games, she had won the gold medal at the World Championships in that event.
“Overall I’m very happy with my race,” said McIntosh. It’s still early in the season and I didn’t really know what to expect. It’s my first endurance race this season and I’m very happy with it. »
Second was the American Emma Weyant with a time of 4:41.85. Her compatriot Kathryn Hazle won the bronze medal (4:47.56).
Alberta’s Emma Finlin triumphed in the B final to secure her ninth place overall.
The world record in this discipline is held by Hungarian Katinka Hosszu with a time of 4:26.36 from 2016.
“There are always lessons to be learned from every race, good or bad,” added McIntosh, silver medalist in the 400-meter freestyle, on Thursday. I’ll keep working to improve and work on the smallest details. »
Ontario’s Josh Liendo also picked up a second medal, silver in the 100-meter butterfly.
American Luke Miller won the race with a time of 52.06 seconds. Liendo followed in 52.48 while American Zach Harting (52.52) completed the podium.
