Better meeting the needs of the LGBTQ community in the fight against substance abuse

The One Team Recovery initiative isn’t a new program, but it improves on a program that doesn’t meet everyone’s needs.

We found that addiction services exist but they are not specifically tailored for the 2SLGBTQ+ communityexplains Colm Holmes, President of the Windsor Pride Community.

However, this community faces unique challenges, he said.

The 2SLGBTQ+ community needs to confront social discrimination, says Holmes. So when it comes to exploring addictions, addictions, and our relationships to our identity, it’s important that we have some part of the program that leads us to explore those aspects.

When people are seeking a journey of recovery, the opportunity to meet with peers who have experienced similar outcomes or are facing similar issues is a really big benefit for everyone. »

The organization is working with the Windsor-Essex Family Health Team and Family Services to deliver the initiative.

The One Team recovery program lasts five weeks and is an outpatient setting. It’s not based on abstinencemeaning participants aren’t required to stop using substances entirely if they don’t want to, according to the designers.

Each cohort consists of 10 to 20 people. The initiative includes two weekly four-hour sessions. There are a total of six meetings per year.

The new strand of the program will initially be offered in Windsor from January 2023 but could be expanded to the region, says Margo Reilly, chief executive of the Windsor Family Health Team.

I know there is interest in the Windsor-Essex areaShe says.
