In Quebec, the proportion of workers who primarily use French at work has fallen slightly in favor of English, according to the latest Statistics Canada data released Nov. 30
In the Montreal region, the industries where the main use of French fell the most from 2001 to 2021 were information and cultural industries, finance and insurance, and professional, scientific and technical services, the agency said.
However, Statistics Canada notes that the increase in the proportion of employees who primarily speak English is partly due to the change in the working languages question.
This change resulted in workers being less likely to use French and English and more likely to use only one of those two languages, they said.
In 2021, 79.9% of workers living in Quebec primarily used French at work, 14% primarily used English, and 5.4% used both languages equally.
Quebec is also characterized by a high prevalence of multilingualism in the workplace, according to Statistics Canada.
Among all provinces and territories, Quebec ranked second to Nunavut in the proportion of workers who regularly speak more than one language at work, with 28.7% of workers.
