Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni yesterday on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
During a discussion on the priorities that unite them within the G20, the two leaders commended the Indonesian leadership for chairing the summit and agreed on the importance of further strengthening cooperation on multilateralism and open, rules-based trade. They reiterated their desire for continued coordination among allies and partners to sustain and enhance international support for Ukraine at the Summit and beyond. The prime ministers discussed the importance of building on the strong ties between their countries to address the global impact of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, including food and energy security.
Like the 75e On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Canada-Italy relations in 2022, the Prime Ministers took the opportunity to discuss the deep ties between Canadians and Italians and the importance of their bilateral relationship in addressing the issues that exist in the world.
Prime Minister Trudeau noted the significant increase in trade between the two countries since the provisional application of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union. Both leaders agreed that strengthening bilateral trade ties has the potential to create good middle-class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic and help both countries build clean economies. Premiers also identified clean technologies, critical minerals and energy as sectors with strong growth potential.
The two leaders also wanted to increase their cooperation in support of regional and international security and to promote and defend democratic values, particularly within the G7, G20 and NATO.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Meloni have agreed to remain in close contact.
