On Tuesday, at least five Lévisiens received a call from someone posing as a bank representative or police officer. The interlocutor informed the victims that they had been scammed and asked for their bank card number and PIN. In some cases, the scammers even demanded that the documents be delivered in an envelope.
Most of the victims are elderly, said the spokeswoman for the Service de Police de la Ville de Lévis (SPVL), Véronique Blouin.
The suspects are very good manipulators, they put the victims in stressful situations, so people have little time to react and they don’t have time to call the police or a bank. They act on the print like that after it’s already too late
‘ she emphasizes.
Amounts of between $1,000 and $2,000 were withdrawn from the victims’ accounts. So far, five people have denounced the scammers, but three have responded and denounced before providing the requested information.
We never give out personal information over the phone, especially PINs or credit or debit card numbers.
remembers Veronique Blouin.
” You should know that banking institutions never work like this and neither does a police department. »
