Asia: Trudeau at summit to strengthen Indo-Pacific ties

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau flew to Asia late Thursday night to attend summits aimed at strengthening Canada’s presence in the Indo-Pacific.

The Prime Minister of Canada will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and Mary Ng, Minister for International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development.

Minister Joly is expected to present Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy soon. During a speech in Toronto on Thursday, she said that global power structures are shifting and that decisions in the Indo-Pacific region will affect the lives of Canadians for generations, encouraging her to believe that Canada is at the table and its influence must increase .

Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy should include warnings to companies against deepening ties with global giant China. The foreign minister is also planning a strategy to prevent a Chinese invasion of Taiwan and deepening ties with other major powers such as India, Japan and South Korea.

Justin Trudeau travels to Indonesia on Monday to attend the G20 summit in Bali. He intends to urge the world’s largest economies to isolate Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

The G20 summit is to focus on strengthening health systems, food and energy security. Prime Minister Trudeau claims that Russia has undermined these systems through its military aggression.
