Trudeau starts international tour with ASEAN summit in Cambodia

Mr Trudeau is expected in Phnom Penh for a meeting of leaders at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.

Canada holds trade negotiations with the region’s booming bloc of 10 countries.

However, experts said Canada’s engagement with ASEAN has been sporadic, leading to the organization’s skepticism about the prospects for an agreement.

G20 and Francophonie

Trudeau will also attend the G20 meeting in Indonesia, a forum for leaders of Asia-Pacific economic cooperation in Thailand and a Francophonie summit in Tunisia.

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, who is expected to present the long-awaited Indo-Pacific strategy later this month, will also be on the trip.

speaking on Wednesday in the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Toronto, said Ms. Joly tectonic plates of global power structures are on the way.

Decisions made in the region will affect the lives of Canadians for generations to come. We need to sit at the table, step up our game and increase our influence. »

The strategy will include warnings to companies deepening ties with global giant China, Minister Joly revealed, and embedding Chinese experts in key messages around the world.

Focus will also be on protecting against an invasion of Taiwan and deepening ties with other major powers such as India, Japan and South Korea.

Mr. Trudeau’s trip to the region should lay the groundwork for increased cooperation.
