American Russell Henley needs to avoid disaster in the final round of the PGA World Wide Technology Championship in Riviera Maya, Mexico after establishing a virtually unassailable lead on Saturday.
After two days of dealing a 63(-8) card early in the tournament, Henley failed to repeat such a result in the third round, but he still performed very well with a 65(-6) card . . The 33-year-old has stalled six birdies and still hasn’t committed a single bogey or worse after 54 pennants.
That made him a cumulative 191 (-22) and a comfortable six-shot lead over his two closest pursuers, compatriots Will Gordon and Patton Kizzire.
Fourth place Irishman Seamus Power delivered the best card of the day after hitting the white object 63 (-8) times. With two eagles and four birdies, he gained 18 places in the overall standings and is seven strokes behind the leader.
On the Canadian side, Adam Hadwin did well with 67 (-4) in the third round. He is tied for 27th with a cumulative 203 (-10). For his part, Nick Taylor played a shot over par 71 to drop to 57th with 209 strokes (-4).
Adam Svensson and Michael Gligic could not qualify for the weekend races.
A Japanese in the lead at home
On the LPGA side, the Japanese won at home at the Toto Classic of Japan. Two of them are in the top 3 after three rounds.
Momoko Ueda played a round of 68 on Saturday, which allowed her to maintain her first position (-14).
Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh did well in the third round, finishing it with a 65 card, good for second place at -13. Closely followed by another Japanese, Miyu Yamashita (-12).
Remember that golfer Maude-Aimée LeBlanc was forced to give up Friday to play the rest of the competition due to illness after suffering a lot of trouble on the first day of the tournament.
