OTTAWA – Russia’s foreign ministry called Canada’s ambassador to Moscow on Monday and said an unidentified person threw a Molotov cocktail at the Russian embassy in Ottawa.

Moscow says Ottawa police turned a blind eye to “aggressive protesters” blocking public access to the consular section of the Russian embassy.

In a statement in Russian released Monday afternoon, the ministry says Canadian authorities are not doing enough to deter or arrest those who commit “hostile acts” against Russian diplomatic personnel.

The statement does not specify when these incidents allegedly occurred. The Russian ministry claims that these gestures constitute criminal acts and that Canada is not respecting the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau argued in London on Sunday that Russia’s actions since invading Ukraine “clearly involve war crimes,” citing reports of mass graves.
