Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to address members of the Ukrainian-Canadian Congress in Winnipeg on Friday morning.
He is also expected to receive a formal request from the Manitoba government for more federal money to help Ukrainians flee the war.
Prime Minister Heather Stefanson says Manitoba is fortunate to have welcomed nearly 12,000 Ukrainians since the Russian invasion began last February.
But she says she needs more money to provide newcomers with housing, health care and education services, among other things.
According to Heather Stefanson, Manitoba hosted more than 10% of all Ukrainian refugees who came to Canada, even though the province accounts for only 4% of Canada’s population.
The Manitoba Premier and her federal counterpart are both scheduled to speak at the opening of the three-day convention in Winnipeg.
They are not declared refugees and do not have refugee status normally associated with federal funds
Heather Stefanson lamented in an interview on Thursday.
