PGA golfers appear to be enjoying the conditions at Port Royal Golf Club in Southampton, Bermuda, as 109 of the 132 players taking part in the Butterfield Championship hit a par of 71-under in Thursday’s opening round.
But none was better than American Austin Smotherman and Australian Harrison Endycott, who each hit the ball 62 (-9) times. The former cleared nine birdies while the latter held up two eagles, seven birdies and two bogeys to get there.
However, the two will have a lot to do over the next few days if they want to maintain this good position, as five golfers share third place, a stroke behind. Eight other competitors are tied in eighth place, two strokes from the top.
Of the three Canadians who played in Bermuda, Nick Taylor had the best first lap. The maple leaf representative didn’t commit a single misstep, in addition to five birdies, for a score of 66 (-5). He is four strokes behind the leaders and after 18 holes is tied for 29th place.
David Hearn, he’s 25 rows back in 54th position, but he’s just a shot behind his compatriot. He started his day very well, with five birdies on the first 14 holes, but he stumbled slightly, with one birdie and two bogeys to finish his course.
Finally, Michael Gligic was able to join the many golfers who hit at least one par shot, he who managed a meager birdie during the day. This puts him in 96th place.
The only golfer who had any real problems in the first round was Bermuda native Kim Swan. The now 65-year-old ex-pro handed an ugly card of 89 (+18).
