Days before the season begins, it seems inevitable that the Montreal Canadiens will make at least one trade.
With Joel Edmundson still struggling with an injury, head coach Martin St-Louis has only three veterans available defensively: Mike Matheson, David Savard and Chris Wideman.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Canadians compromised,” Renaud Lavoie said on Friday JiC.
“Do you really want three rookies on defense on any given night in the National League? The answer is no. You’ll likely choose a role-playing player who can stabilize things a bit. You will give your young defenders some oxygen.
Then on the net, the situation isn’t much better with Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault. Only Cayden Primeau also has a contract allowing him to play at the Bettman Circuit.
“It’s the only team that has only three goalies under contract to play in the National League,” continued Renaud Lavoie. Most teams have four, five, six… that’s the norm. This will be an important file to keep track of from now until the opening game.
Expect movement in the Habs over the next few days, whether through waivers or trades.
