The Montreal Canadiens announced that Owen Beck and Brandon Gignac were fired after tonight’s game against the Ottawa Senators.
Beck, who signed his first professional contract this morning, is moving to the OHL with his junior team from Mississauga. As for Gignac, he’ll be reporting to the rocket storage facility in Laval.
Beck, who was selected in the second round this year, has impressed in the Canadian camp.
For his part, Gignac played a career game in the NHL in the uniform of the New Jersey Devils. Last year he scored ten goals and had 16 assists in 48 games for Lavail.
Earlier in the day, the squad dropped seven players from their camp, including Slovakia’s Filip Mesar.
The Habs selected Mesar with the 26th pick of the final draft. He’s done well in the rookie tournament and preseason games, but he himself admitted he needs experience and brawn before he can compete with NHL players.
Mesar will report to Laval Rocket Camp, which began earlier this week. The 18-year-old forward could also potentially be traded to the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers.
Defender Mattias Norlinder has also been released and will report to the Rocket camp, as will goalkeeper Kevin Poulin and forward Xavier Simoneau. Forwards Alex Belzile, Anthony Richard and Mitchell Stephens will do the same if not claimed on waivers by 2pm Wednesday.
There are now 35 players in the Canadian camp, 31 of them healthy, 18 attackers, ten defenders and three goalkeepers.
