Statement by the Prime Minister on the 1000th day since the apparent shooting down of flight PS752

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today on the occasion of the 1,000the Day has passed since Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 was apparently shot down:

“1,000 days ago, the Iranian regime caused horror by unlawfully shooting down the PS752 passenger plane. As a result, he took the lives of the 176 innocent people on board, including 55 Canadians, 30 permanent residents and a total of 138 people traveling to Canada. They were mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, teachers and students, but most of all they were loved ones.

“In the 1,000 days since, people across the country have mourned the loss of their loved ones. We Canadians share their grief. Yesterday I met with the families of the victims of Flight PS752 to express my deepest condolences. After that crime, Canada stood by them – and we will continue to do so. We have created new avenues of permanent residence for survivors’ families and provided psychological support, and we constantly reaffirm Canada’s unwavering commitment to holding the Iranian regime accountable for its horrific actions.

“Canada and its partners in the Coordination Group are committed to holding Iran accountable in accordance with international law. Within the International Civil Aviation Organization, Canada continues to advance the Aviation Safety Initiative and close gaps in the accident investigation process to ensure a situation like this does not happen again. We continue our relentless search for justice for the families of these victims and will stop at nothing to hold the regime to account.

“Today, the regime continues its crackdown on courageous Iranian women who are protesting the tragic death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iran’s so-called ‘moral police’. Demonstrators were killed by the dozens. Once again, the Iranian regime is showing its blatant disregard for human rights and human life. Canada wholeheartedly supports these brave women who are walking the streets of Iran and around the world in solidarity.

“This unacceptable propensity for gross and systematic human rights abuses and brutal killings must end. That is why yesterday we imposed new sanctions on Iran, targeting 34 individuals and entities. These include the Iranian regime’s “moral police” and senior regime officials, some of whom belong to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. These sanctions are in addition to the sanctions and measures we have already imposed, which are among the toughest any country has imposed on Iran. They also reflect Canada’s recognition of Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism.

“Today we remember the innocent victims of flight PS752 and stand in solidarity with all those defending human rights at home and abroad. The Iranian regime will be held accountable for its horrific acts. »
