With an eagle on the 16th hole, Canadian golfer Nick Taylor did well Thursday in the first round of the Fortinet Championship in Napa Valley, California.
The 34-year-old Winnipeg native ended his day with a score of 67 (-5). He shares sixth place in the competition with nine other golfers, including American Rickie Fowler.
Simply stunning American Justin Lower had the lowest score at 63 (-9). He showed excellent consistency and finished the course with nine birdies, four of them in a row, and nine pars. He is two shots ahead of his closest pursuer, American Max Homa.
In Taylor’s case, he managed to put himself in this interesting position by losing five par on the back nine. The tournament had started rather badly for him with two bogeys on the first three holes. However, he saved the day in the fourth and fifth pennants with back-to-back birdies.
On the 16th hole, a par 5 of 572 yards, the Maple Leaf representative did it all in three short shots. For his part, Adam Svensson, also of Canada, played 68 (-4) and sits in 16th place.
Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes tied for 35th place after dealing identical cards of 70(-2). Taylor Pendrith (-1; 61st) and Michael Gligic (+3; 131st) are the other Maple Leaf members present in California.
Several athletes were unable to complete their lap due to darkness.
