Thanks to his coach, Mesar remains motivated and very happy in the AHL

While appearances may not be deceiving for a rare time, Laval Rocket fans can take comfort in the idea that the team’s players, including Canadian prospect Filip Mesar, are in high spirits and ready to explode.

The young man, CH’s first-round pick in the 2022 draft, was hardly able to impress in the big club’s preparatory camp this fall before moving to the American Hockey League (AHL). However, in his first two games of the season with the subsidiary, the exact opposite was the case. The Slovakian, who was careful not to comment in detail on the statements made by his compatriot and friend Juraj Slafkovsky about the “nepotism” of his country’s ice hockey association, seems satisfied.

His four points already illustrate the work that has been done over the last few days. A large part of the credit here goes to Pascal Vincent, who plays a lasting mentorship role. Additionally, the Rocket’s head coach took a few minutes during Tuesday’s practice session to give his 20-year-old student personal advice along the ramp. He says he is very grateful for the help provided.

“He shows me how it’s done and I feel very comfortable. He is a great coach and has pushed my development very well so far. It is a pleasure to work with him,” said Mesar with a beaming smile.

The good news here is that the feeling is mutual. During his press conference, Vincent said he was pleased with the efforts of the trio of Owen Beck and Jared Davidson.

“I didn’t know him before, but so far I’m impressed. He doesn’t try to do too much and his line is a good mix. Beck is effective on faceoffs and Davidson has a good shot, among other things. The three are looking forward to developing together, said the pilot. It’s one of the best [trios]the players are doing their best.”

“During training we measure different things. In Filip’s case there is the commitment, the ability to go back and make a defensive retreat. His intentions are good, as is the intensity.”

The learning and lessons continue

In short, the winger is in the right place to continue his lessons. What does he want to improve on his pencil case to convince the Habs to send him to Montreal?

“In my head I want to prove why I was picked in the first round. “Even though it is difficult and frustrating at times, my focus remains on the ice,” he said. My short experience in the AHL helps me here. It’s a more difficult and physical league. I saw fast and strong players. That’s why I have to be stronger, faster, take better shots and be more solid in the defensive zone.

“From last year to today I have grown mentally. “I understand more stuff,” he added. These guys are very good, but that’s not all you should pay attention to. I understood that you have to work much harder and more often.”
