Canada helps vulnerable Canadians leave Haiti

March 25, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, made the following statement today:

“Canada today began facilitating small-scale exits from Haiti to the Dominican Republic for vulnerable Canadian citizens. We are grateful for the support of the Dominican Republic in helping us ensure the safety of Canadian citizens.

“Due to the eligibility requirements to enter the Dominican Republic, this option is only available to Canadian citizens who hold a valid Canadian passport. However, Canada continues to work with its partners and allies to find other options for people who are not in this group.

“Our immediate priority remains the safety of Canadians. Canada is committed to supporting Haiti and the Haitian people and we continue to closely monitor the security situation in Haiti. We are working tirelessly to assist Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their families who are still here.

“To assist affected Canadians, Canada deployed three members of Global Affairs Canada’s Permanent Rapid Deployment Team (PRDT) to the region to support its operations and provide emergency response, coordination support, consular assistance and logistical support.

“The EPDR consists of highly trained personnel who are rapidly deployable to assist the Government of Canada in responding to emergency situations.

“If you are a Canadian citizen in Haiti and want to leave, you must use theRegistration of Canadians abroad and communicate with Emergency Monitoring and Response Center of Global Affairs Canada to discuss your situation.

“Canadians, permanent residents and their immediate family members who intend to travel to Canada should apply for a travel document as soon as possible.

“We continue to urge all Canadians still in Haiti to consult the website travel.gc.ca as often as possible to receive updates and use the serviceRegistration of Canadians abroad This will allow us to send important updates and information about available help directly to you.
