EDMONTON — Captain Mason McTavish scored four goals and added two assists in Edmonton on Thursday to lead Canada to a stunning 11-1 win over Slovakia in a World Junior Hockey Championships game.
Brennan Othmann and Joshua Roy each scored and recorded two assists for Canada (2-0-0).
Connor Bedard, Will Cuylle, Logan Stankoven and Olen Zellweger all had a goal and an assist. Zack Ostapchuk scored the other goal for the Canadian team.
In the middle of the second period, Matej Kaslik scored Slovakia’s only goal (0-0-2).
Canada goalkeeper Dylan Garand made 22 saves on his first appearance of the tournament. His rival Tomas Bolo blocked 33 of 44 shots aimed at him.
Canada led 4-0 after 20 minutes thanks to goals from Bedard, Cuylle, Othmann and Zellwegger. McTavish contributed to the first two goals of the game.
McTavish scored his first three goals of the game in the middle after Stankoven scored just 62 seconds into the game.
McTavish leads the tournament with eight points, including four goals.
Canada, who defeated Latvia 5-2 on Wednesday, will play their next group game on Saturday against the Czech Republic (1-0-1), who lost 3-4 in the first penalty shoot-out to Finland (0-2-0). Thursday.
