(Ottawa) The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on Monday issued a recall of brands of plant-based beverages made from almonds, cashews, coconut and oats due to problems with Listeria bacteria.
The agency’s recall applies to almond, coconut milk and almond-coconut beverages and oat beverages, as well as the Silk brand almond beverage.
The products in question were manufactured in Ontario and distributed by Danone Canada, which says it has preemptively halted all production and shipping from that third-party factory to conduct a thorough investigation.
“We are deeply concerned about this situation and take it very seriously,” said Frédéric Guichard, president of Danone Canada, in a statement.
“At this time, our efforts are focused on ensuring consumer protection through this rapid recall and conducting a thorough investigation with our third-party manufacturer.”
According to the CFIA, the recall was triggered by an investigation into an outbreak of foodborne illness and reported the possible presence of illnesses associated with consumption of the products.
The target products are certain Silk Canada refrigerated products sold in 1.75L to 1.89L containers.
Anyone who believes they have contracted listeriosis after consuming any of the recalled products, most of which have an October 4 expiration date, should seek medical attention.
Recalled products should be discarded or returned to the store where they were purchased.
The CFIA says foods contaminated with listeria may not look or smell like spoiled food, but can still make you sick. Symptoms of listeriosis may include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headaches, and stiff neck.
