Canada maintained its impeccable record and inflicted a first defeat on Switzerland at the World Cup on Sunday in the Czech Republic.
The maple leaf won 3 to 2.
After Dylan Cozens scored on the power play, Kevin Fiala brought everyone back to first place after 20 minutes of play. Romain Loeffel gave the Swiss the lead at the start of the second period.
The celebrations were short-lived, however, as Cozens repeated them again moments later. Nick Paul scored the winning goal before the end of the middle period and with a rival in the penalty box. All winning goals came in the power play.
“I like the way it is [Dylan Cozens] “He’s improved his game on offense, but most of all I like how he played without the puck,” said head coach André Tourigny, whose comments were reported in a press release from Hockey Canada.
“He has really improved his defensive game, playing short shifts and winning important face-offs. He does a lot for us and sometimes does great things behind the scenes. He plays a very big role in our team.”
This game was marked by the exclusion of Fiala in the second period. The Swiss star player was punished for making Cozens kneel. While one of his teammates took his place in the penalty area, Canada scored the equalizer and the winning goal.
“It was quite a game,” forward John Tavares said. We have great respect for the Swiss and their style of play and they are playing a great tournament so far. They are very dynamic offensively, especially when their defenders support the attack, and we knew our power play really came into its own today and that aspect of the game will be important for us for the rest of the tournament.

With today’s win, the Canadians have regained first place in Group A. They have 17 points, two more than the Czech Republic. Canada will complete the preliminary round of the tournament against this nation on Tuesday.
In addition, Canadian defender Bowen Byram was suspended for the duel against Switzerland. The full-back was penalized by the International Hockey Federation for sticking Finn Jesse Puljujarvi in the crotch.
