Statement by the Prime Minister on the 200th anniversary of Brazil’s independence

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today on the occasion of the 200the Brazilian Independence Day:

“200 years ago today, Brazil gained its independence. So we join the Brazilian communities in Canada and around the world in celebrating the achievement of this important milestone and recognizing the many contributions Brazilians make to the world.

“Relationships between Canada and Brazil date back to 1866, before Confederation, when Canada’s first trade office was opened in Brazil. Our diplomatic relations were officially established with the opening of the Brazilian Embassy in Ottawa in 1941 and our Embassy in Brazil three years later. During World War II, Canadian and Brazilian soldiers fought as partners to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. In doing so, they forged ties that still connect our two countries today.

“Over the years, Canada-Brazil relations have grown even stronger through our partnership in regional and multilateral institutions such as the G20, the Organization of American States and the United Nations. We also work together on many issues such as: B. Supporting refugees and migrants to promote peace and stability in America, expanding trade and investment to spur economic growth that benefits all, and fostering agricultural innovation to support global food security.

“Our two countries are united by the strong bonds that have developed between our peoples. In fact, more than 120,000 people of Brazilian descent live in Canada today. The many contributions they make to our social, cultural and economic fabric help make Canada stronger, more diverse and more inclusive. Additionally, Canada is proud to be one of the top destinations for young Brazilians wishing to study abroad and we are committed to further increasing academic and scholarly exchanges between our two countries.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I extend our best wishes to all those celebrating Brazil’s Independence Day.

“Feliz Dia da Independencia! »
