Proposal for a new electoral map: Saint-Maurice would disappear

Mauricie would lose a constituency under changes to the electoral map proposed by the Quebec Electoral Representation Commission.

From five, the number of provincial constituencies would increase to four as Saint-Maurice would disappear.

The Commission's proposal would ensure that Saint-Boniface, Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc and Shawinigan-Sud would be incorporated into the Maskinongé county. Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel would become Champlain and part of Old Shawinigan would become Laviolette.

“The Shawinigan Sud sector, which should be at Maskinongé, makes little sense. There's not much bonding there. That is why I will work to ensure that citizens feel comfortable in the district in which they will live. And in the map that is proposed to me I see a small problem. But it will also be up to citizens to come to these public hearings. I am sure I will be there,” says Pierre Giguère, MP for Saint-Maurice.

Public consultation meetings will be held in April and May. Locally, the meeting is scheduled for May 21 in Shawinigan.
