The Saskatchewan government is slowing its digital ID project, preferring to monitor similar programs underway in other provinces.
The tender for the Saskatchewan Service Connect will therefore not take place.
A government spokesman offers the ministry’s information technology managers SaskBuilds and Procurement to contact their colleagues in other provinces.
Last month the minister responsible for SaskBuildsJim Reiter, stated that the government is discussing issues related to the digital ID card with the data protection commissioner.
Mr. Reiter had said it was still too early in the planning phase to provide further details.
Minister Jim Reiter made it clear that the digital ID card was not mandatory. It would allow its voluntary users to quickly present their identification document.
Independent MP Nadine Wilson believes it makes sense to monitor developments in the provinces.
According to Ms Wilson, this will make it possible to see whether people are using it, understand its benefits and find ways to ensure citizens’ privacy is protected.
