Savard, the real “leader” of the defense

David Savard may not wear an “A” on his jersey, but he is undoubtedly the true leader of the Canadiens’ defensive brigade.

This emerged on Wednesday in the “JiC” segment “Colosseum”.

Without taking anything away from the man who wears the “A” on defense, Mike Matheson, it’s clear that Savard’s absence has been felt since his injury on Oct. 23 during a game in Buffalo. The proof is that the Habs haven’t managed to win in regular time since then, let alone the two-win-in-10-game streak they’re currently on.

“Is it a coincidence that the Canadians haven’t won in regular time since David Savard’s injury?” asked columnist Tony Marinaro.

“Savard is more important to this team than a lot of people think,” he added. He’s not “flashy,” but he remains one of the three best defenders on this team. And some nights he’s number one.”

Before him, host Jean-Charles Lajoie wholeheartedly agreed.

“I’ll go further,” he said. It has greater significance than management itself realizes.”
