The political parties represented in the National Assembly have finally decided to disinvite ethno-nationalist Alexandre Cormier-Denis from the current consultation on immigration.

Prime Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette’s office confirmed this information to The Canadian Press.

On Wednesday morning – before this decision was taken – the presence of Mr Cormier-Denis’ name on the list of people invited to the immigration consultation had caused unrest among the various political parties.

When asked if this man had his place during the consultation, Prime Minister François Legault replied: I do not think so.

Mr. Cormier-Denis is notably an apostle of the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory, which claims that political elites are seeking to replace the white population through massive waves of immigration.

In his videos, which are broadcast particularly on X (formerly Twitter), he regularly and vehemently attacks newcomers.

He also directly attacked Solidarity MP Ruba Ghazal. Mr. Cormier-Denis also attacks indigenous peoples and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Mr Jolin-Barrette described Alexandre Cormier-Denis’ comments as slippery but I wouldn’t say if they were hateful.

It’s the left-wing media pivot point who stressed that the name of this man with clearly defined right-wing positions is on the list of people who will speak during this immigration planning consultation late on Thursday.

I absolutely do not support Mr Cormier-Denis’ comments. We as a political party don’t want to hear it on ThursdayFor her part, reiterated the Minister of Immigration, Christine Fréchette.

In 2016, Mr. Cormier-Denis, as a member of the Parti Québécois, organized a meeting with Marine Le Pen, then president of the Front National, a French far-right party.

At a press conference on Wednesday morning, the Parti Québécois (PQ) claimed it had told the government it did not want Mr Cormier-Denis to be invited to the National Assembly.

I do not agree in any way, directly or indirectly, with this person’s comments, but we have adopted procedures. For his part, the conservative leader Éric Duhaime reiterated that the Legault government continues to restrict freedom of expression in Quebec, without clear and democratic guidelines.

Mr. Cormier-Denis and I are ideological opponents. However, the manner in which he was just thrown out of the parliamentary committee is cavalier to say the least. On what basis do we accept or reject the testimony of a citizen or group? […] If this is still a case, the decision will be made at the discretion of the CAQ and his liberal, solidarity and PQ allies? he said in a written statement.
