The picture is frightening and the air unbearable: the smoke from the fires that devastated Canada has reached New York. The images of the skyline submerged in thick orange fog speak for themselves, but the numbers have also spoken: the air there is now just as polluted as in Delhi or Baghdad.
The U.S. air quality index for New York reached 222 on a scale of 0 to 500, putting the air in the “very unhealthy” category on Tuesday.
Other cities in North America were also affected by smoke from these unprecedented fires, including Detroit.
Out of control in Canada
Canada is on track to experience the worst wildfire season in its history if the pace of fires continues. According to authorities, about 3.3 million hectares (8.2 million acres) have been burned so far. Some 413 fires are ongoing and 26,000 Canadians have had to evacuate their homes.
