Canada’s unemployment rate was 5.7% last month, Statistics Canada said Friday.
This is the fourth monthly increase in the last six months. Since April, the rate has risen 0.7 percentage points nationwide after remaining at a near-record low of 5% from December 2022 to April last year.
The federal agency adds that Quebec’s unemployment rate was 4.9% last month, an increase of 0.5%. Employment fell by 22,000 or 0.5%.

On the other hand, declines were observed in wholesale and retail trade as well as in the manufacturing sector.
Statistics Canada reports that employment rose in four provinces last month, notably by 1.7% in Nova Scotia and 0.6% in New Brunswick, while overall there was little variation. Prince Edward Island.
From September to October, the unemployment rate fell in the three Maritime provinces: from 7.2% to 6.6% in New Brunswick, from 6.9% to 6.6% in Nova Scotia and from 6.3% to 6.2 % on Prince Edward Island.
