The Honorable Mary T. Moreau was born in Edmonton, Alberta. Before starting her law studies, she studied at the Faculté Saint-Jean at the University of Alberta. She completed her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Alberta in 1979 after attending the University of Sherbrooke’s Common Law and Civil Law Exchange Program in 1977. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta in 2019 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Women In Law Leadership earlier this year.
Chief Justice Moreau was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1980. As a lawyer, she worked primarily in criminal law, constitutional law and civil law. She has argued numerous important cases relating to the rights of linguistic minorities and the EU Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. She is co-founder of the Association of French-speaking Lawyers of Alberta.
She was appointed judge of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta in 1994. In addition, she was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Yukon in 1996 and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories in 2005. She was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta.
Throughout her legal career, Chief Justice Moreau has been very active in the areas of legal education, administration and ethics.
She regularly trains judges through conferences and programs and served as co-chair of the National Judicial Institute’s annual Spring National Criminal Law Conference for six years. She is also actively involved in international training and support projects for judges. From 2014 to 2017 she was a member of the National Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics. She was President of the Canadian Superior Court Judges Association from 2011 to 2012.
She currently chairs the Judicial Advisory Committee on the Appointments of Military Judges and the Judicial Advisory Committee on International Engagement of the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs.
Chief Justice Moreau has been a member of the Canadian Judicial Council since 2017. She has been a member of the Council’s Executive Committee since 2021 and a member of the Judicial Conduct Committee since 2020. Since 2022, she has been Chair of the Subcommittee on Technology She is a member of the Action Committee on Modernizing Judicial Activities, co-chaired by the Minister of Justice and the Chief Justice of Canada.
