Women’s football | The Canadian team will play games in Montreal and Halifax

Soccer Canada confirmed Friday that the Canadian women’s soccer team will face Brazil in the FIFA international window in Montreal and Halifax later this month.

The friendlies, scheduled for Oct. 28 at the Stade Saputo and Oct. 31 at the Wanderers Grounds, follow the Canadians’ 4-1 aggregate victory over Jamaica last month in a two-leg Olympic qualifier.

“We are excited to officially start our new Olympic journey against Brazil, a team we have a long Olympic history against,” Canada coach Bev Priestman said in a news release. Playing at home again in front of our fans will be the ideal step to give us momentum and prepare for the Paris Games in 2024.”

The Canadians in 10th placee World ranked, beat Brazil 2-0 in their last meeting in February in Nashville at the SheBelieves Cup.

Canada is 12-10-7 against the Brazilians. Two of these victories came in shootouts, including one in the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament at the Tokyo Games, before the Maple Leaf representatives won the gold medal.

Brazil, who returned from an eight-day training camp in September, have already announced their 24-man squad, which includes Marta, Kerolin, Debinha and Adriana.

Like the Canadians, the Brazilians were quickly eliminated from the Women’s World Cup this summer. They failed to reach the knockout stages and finished third in Group F.

Coach Pia Sundhage resigned from her position after the World Cup and Arthur Elias took over.

Elias led Corinthians to four Brazilian championships and two Copa Libertadores titles.

We have to go back to October 2021 to see the last time the Canadian team played a game in Montreal. They then defeated New Zealand 1-0 during their post-Games celebration tour in Tokyo. The last time the Canadiens played a game in the Maritimes was a 1-0 victory over China in Moncton in May 2012.
