(Ottawa) Marking the anniversary of the death of a young woman who sparked global protests a year ago, Canada announced new sanctions against six senior Iranian regime officials who are now barred from entering the country or owning assets there.
The new sanctions reflect Canada’s allies and include members of the Cultural Revolution Supreme Council, an unelected body that created the so-called morality police tasked with enforcing hijab rules.
Saturday marks the first anniversary of the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was imprisoned after she was arrested for not wearing her hijab properly.
In particular, Canada is imposing sanctions on Abdol Hossein Khosrow Panah, who took over the group in January and increased surveillance of women in Iran.
Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly says she has seen an acceleration in repression against Iranian women over the past year.
“Today’s sanctions reflect our unwavering commitment to supporting the Iranian people, especially women and girls, to continue courageously defending their rights,” Ms. saidMe Joly in a press release.
This is the 14the Series of sanctions Canada has imposed on Iran over the past 11 months. These sanctions affect 31 companies and 129 individuals.
