American Scottie Scheffler went into the finals of the PGA Tour Championship, the final of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, six shots ahead of his nearest challenger, but the sky was falling on his head and Rory McIlroy took the opportunity to climb the slope and Triumph, Sunday in Atlanta.
The two men were also paired on the final day of activities. The Northern Irishman significantly closed the gap in the front nine, blocking four birdies against a single bogey, while Scheffler committed three bogeys against a meager birdie, closing the gap between them in a single shot.
The eventual winner eventually leveled the game on the 12th hole before bogeying two pennants later, only to correct that misstep on the next hole.
Meanwhile, Scheffler failed to do better than par eight of nine times and committed another bogey on the 16th pennant to hand his rival the win.
Scheffler eventually finished the competition in second place with South Korea’s Sungjae Im, one shot behind the winner.
It is the third time in his career that McIlroy has won the FedEx Cup Playoff title. He also leaves with the $18 million check awarded to the winner.
The only Canadian in the race, Corey Conners, secured a position on the last lap after hitting the white object 67 (-3) times. He finished 26th, 18 strokes behind McIlroy.
