Two brothers from Regina completed the Queen City Marathon together on Sunday. Although they didn’t break any records, they completed a very special race again this year, on foot and on bikes.
Shaun Hesse and his brother David Hesse finished the race to applause.
For just over four hours, Shaun Hesse pushed his brother David Hesse’s wheelchair a distance of 26.2 miles.
Sean says the racing was tough this year and it wasn’t his best time.
But the main goal was to spend time with his big brother David, 56 years old.
The latter suffers from cerebral palsy and has been in a wheelchair since birth.
We just want to make sure that we have a good time, that we go out and that people cheer us on for it
argues Shaun Hesse.
It’s good for both our mental health and allows us to get physical activity outside.
Inspired by the Boston Marathon
At the 2014 Boston Marathon, Shaun was inspired by a man who ran with his son in a special three-wheeled racing chair.
Shaun explains that this model is really well designed to accommodate someone who is constantly in a wheelchair. Its center of gravity makes the chair easier to handle.
Shaun wasn’t sure at first if David would like to try it.
But after five marathons together, Shaun is now convinced that David likes it.
He loves the audience, everyone is cheering for him, how can you not love that? On a nice day he goes out and likes to drink a soft drink afterwards
Shaun claims.
Shaun and David plan to return to the Queen City Marathon event next year.
A volunteer, Amanda Kline, reminds us that the event is open to people with disabilities who would like to participate.
This is truly an event for all ages. And we won’t stop you if you’re in a wheelchair.
