Today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s support for the ASEAN-Canada strategic partnership, particularly in its capacity as Canada’s coordinating country within ASEAN, and shared his views on areas of cooperation that will strengthen bilateral ties and create good jobs in both countries would create .

The prime ministers discussed cooperation to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions, as well as intensify cooperation in the fields of renewable energy, agri-food, infrastructure and clean and advanced technologies. Prime Minister Trudeau also announced that a Team Canada trade mission to Malaysia is planned for 2024.

Prime Minister Trudeau provided an update on Canada’s implementation of the Indo-Pacific Strategy, which aims to boost regional initiatives in the areas of trade and investment, defense and security, sustainable development and the fight against climate change. Leaders also discussed existing programs to strengthen ties between the people of Canada and Malaysia, including the recently expanded Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchange Programs for Development initiative.

Leaders agreed on the importance of working together to strengthen compliance with the rules-based international order, especially in light of Russia’s illegal and unjustified war against Ukraine.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Anwar reiterated their commitment to further strengthen bilateral Canada-Malaysia ties and agreed to stay in touch.
