Judith Kyrinis leads after round one of the 2023 Canada Senior Women’s Championship

Woodstock, PEI – Mill River Golf Resort has proven to be a true test for the best senior women competitors in Canada and the United States. Of all 131 golfers, just one hit par of 72 in Wednesday’s opening round of the 2023 Canadian Senior Women’s Championship presented by BDO.

Judith Kyrinis, a two-time Canadian Senior Women’s Championship winner and this year’s Canadian Mid-Amateur Champion, tops the rankings after the first round. Kyrinis of Thornhill, Ontario had a total of five birdies and two double bogeys in the top nine that day.

Amy Ellertson of Free Union, Virginia, scored 74, 2 over par, and placed second after the first round. Ellertson has three birdies and is two strokes behind Kyrinis.

Mary-Ann Hayward of Saint Thomas, Ontario, and a member of Team Ontario, had two birdies and is third place plus three after the first round.

Two players shot 76 and tied four shots behind Kyrinis in fourth place: defending champion Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay, BC and Rhonda Orr of Winnipeg, MB. Three players are tied in sixth place, five shots behind the leader.

In the super senior division, Ellertson leads by plus 2, Hayward is a shot behind in second place and Orr is third.

At the end of the second round, the draw is reduced to the best 70 including senior division matches. At least five Super Seniors are killed, as is anyone within ten shots of the Super Senior leader.

Team Ontario, consisting of Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke, Hayward and Kyrinis, has a six-shot lead over British Columbia in the inter-provincial team championship. Kyrinis and Hayward’s cards counted towards the team’s total (3 over) in Wednesday’s round.

The 2023 Canadian Women’s Senior Championship winner will receive a bye to the 2023 USA Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, 2024 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship, 2024 Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship and 2024 USA Women’s Senior Open.
