Family of woman who died in prison sues NS

The family of a Mi’kmaw woman who died in a Nova Scotia correctional facility is suing the provincial health care system and attorney general.

Sarah Rose Denny, 36, was detained at Central Nova Scotia Correctional Institution in Dartmouth.

The woman, from Eskasoni, an indigenous community in Cape Breton, reportedly sought medical attention several times in March due to symptoms of pneumonia.

The lawsuit, filed by her family, alleges that a correctional facility nurse instead classified Sarah Rose Denny as having alcohol withdrawal and failed to treat her symptoms.

The nurse’s inaction would have done it contributed directly to the deterioration of Sarah’s health and tragically resulted in her death, which could have been avoidedwe can read in the indictment.

Sarah Rose Denny was eventually admitted to Dartmouth General Hospital on March 26, 2023 and died of pneumonia shortly thereafter.

The lawsuit also alleges that when the woman was arrested, her mother told the RCMP that her daughter was unwell and needed to see a doctor.

The Nova Scotia health system and attorney general declined to comment on the case.
