Greece and Algeria have been ravaged by fierce fires for several days. However, these wildfires are not the only ones currently ravaging the planet.
Southern Italy as well as the CanadanorthAustraliaL’AmazonL’Africa south of the Sahara or Madagascar In particular, the prey of many fires.
L’Indépendant invites you to discover and follow the world Map below interactive, created by Global forest clock and updated twice a day, the current fires in the world thanks to the real-time data NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) service.
You can zoom in or out using the buttons on the map. You can also display the development of over time Forest fires by selecting a time period to be displayed in the legend box.
VIIRS Active Wildfire Data (VNP14IMGT) is the latest wildfire tracking product from FIRMS, identifying wildfire locations around the world in near real-time.
375m resolution
The information is collected by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) sensor and processed by a wildfire detection algorithm to report active fires. Each point on the map represents the center of a 375 meter pixel marked by the algorithm.
VIIRS data is more accurate than MODIS data with a resolution of 1 km, which improves the detection of smaller fires and allows a more reliable estimation of the fire extent. They are also better calibrated to detect fires at night.
Each fire alarm has a confidence score, low, normal, or high, to help users assess the quality of each fire hotspot/pixel.
Please note that not all fires are detected. There are several reasons why VIIRS may not have detected a particular fire. The fire could have started and ended between satellite passes. The fire may have been too small or not hot enough to be detected within the 375 meter pixel. Clouds, heavy smoke and tree canopy can completely obscure a fire.
Due to sampling timing issues, it is not recommended to use areas with active fires to estimate area burned.
When zoomed out, this data filter exhibits a degree of uncertainty as some points must be removed to be visible at a larger scale. Zoom in for better detail.
