(Budapest) Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished sixth in the 200 meters at the World Athletics Championships.
De Grasse, the reigning Olympic champion, clocked 20.14 seconds in Friday’s final. He finished ahead of the winner, American Noah Lyles, who stopped the clock at 19:52.
“I made it to the final despite this difficult season,” said De Grasse. Honestly I shouldn’t have been there. Just because of the way my season went, I shouldn’t have taken part in this final. »
Lyles had previously also won gold in the 100 meters at the World Championships. Next to him on the podium were his compatriot Erriyon Knighton (19.75) and Batswana Letslie Tebogo (19.81).
It is the first time in his career that De Grasse has not finished on the podium at a major international competition – the Olympic Games and the World Championships. He had not qualified for the 100-meter dash that season.
“Mentally I know I’m at 100% so I have to keep working physically,” added the Canadian. I need to keep training, consistent and healthy when it really matters. Those are the things I need to work on for the next year. »
Previously, the Canadian team had not qualified for the final in the 4x100m relay without De Grasse. She will therefore not be able to defend the title she acquired in Oregon in 2022.
The situation in the decathlon is more pleasing. Pierce LePage and Damian Warner are in the thick of the fight, sitting second and third after five of 10 events.
At the top of the ranking is the German Leo Neugebauer.
The last five events of the decathlon take place on Saturday.
