(Budapest) Canada’s Marco Arop secured his ticket to the men’s 800m semifinals at the World Athletics Championships on Tuesday.
Arop took first place in his run with a time of one minute and 45.05 seconds. With his time, he took second place in the preliminary round overall table.
The 24-year-old runner from Edmonton won bronze at last year’s World Championships. He became only the second Canadian to win a medal at this World Championships, after Gary Reed, the 2007 silver medalist in Osaka, Japan.
The 800m semi-final takes place on Thursday, followed by the final on Saturday.
In additional results Tuesday, Saskatchewan’s Michelle Harrison qualified for the semifinals of the women’s 100-meter hurdles. She managed 12.88 seconds.
Quebec’s Jean-Simon Desgagnés finished eighth out of 16 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal best of 8:20.04.
Savannah Sutherland of Saskatchewan finished sixth in her semifinal run in the 400 meter hurdles with 54.99 seconds. She did not qualify for the final.
