(Toronto) A culture and media advocacy group this week is calling on Canadians to boycott Facebook and Instagram.
FRIENDS of Broadcasting is urging people to stop posting content on Meta’s platforms August 23-24.
The group says the move is to show that Canadians are not fooled by Meta, which decided to remove messages from its platforms in response to a recently passed law.
The Online News Act requires tech giants Meta and Google to enter into agreements with news outlets whose journalistic content is linked or reused on their platforms.
So far, Meta has been reluctant to cooperate with any deal.
The group’s executive director, Marla Boltman, believes that the boycott will show Meta that when information leaves the platform, users will leave the platform.
“The eyes on their platforms are Meta’s most valuable asset,” she added in a statement.
“The loss of many Canadian users, even for a short time, will get their attention. Most importantly, it gives Canadians an opportunity to vent their frustration and disappointment with Meta. »
