Running back Walter Fletcher stood out, as did quarterback Caleb Evans. The attacking heroes of the Alouettes had to be different, the Montreal club won 41-12 against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday night at Percival Molson Stadium. Check out the highlights above.
In the absence of quarterback Cody Fajardo, Evans prevailed in the Alouettes’ first offensive sequence. Number 5 used his legs to run the ball 27 yards. Fletcher, who was substituted for the injured William Stanback, then put the Alouettes on target. It was finally Evans, known for his efficiency in short games, who got the middle finger on a two-yard run.
“We made a decision about 30 minutes before the game after watching the warm-up,” head coach Jason Maas said of the quarterback pick. I felt it was in the team’s best interest to put in another quarterback and let Cody rest.
Hats off to the offensive line!
The tone was set. Evans eventually had two quick touchdowns and another pass on the night. Before him, the Alouettes’ offensive line dominated the Roughriders’ defensive line.
“They kicked ass and dropped Evans. I would put it in other words, but I can’t, they really kicked ass. They created openings to allow floor games.
In Fletcher’s case, he again stood out early in the second quarter. The 26-year-old running back, under a script, accepted a side pass from Evans and began clearing for 68 yards. He also took advantage of a block from receiver Austin Mack in the sequence to get a little further. In addition to that reception, Fletcher rushed for 73 yards on 15 carries.
“I knew Fletcher would be ready,” Maas said. Everyone in this dressing room trusts Fletch.”
Mack at the helm of the CFL
“Impressive,” Mack added just after half-time. He accepted a pass from Evans before racing into the pay zone with a spectacular 56-yard play. The Alouettes rookie is one of the top pass receivers in Canada’s league and is now piling up 657 yards after eight games, an Ambrosie Circuit record.
At the Roughriders, an injury to quarterback Mason Fine hurt the visitors in the second quarter. His substitute Jake Delogala was intercepted by Kabion Ento on his second attempt at a pass. It was Ento’s second interception this season.
Complementing the work of Walter Fletcher, Jeshrun Antwi also did well as a running back for the Alouettes. He also scored a touchdown on a 19-yard play in the third quarter.
- In the shadows, Quebec’s Alexandre Gagné did an excellent job on the special teams, managing to play many tackles at the opponent’s expense.
- 17,027 fans attended the Percival Molson Stadium on Friday night.
- The Alouettes’ next game is scheduled for Saturday, August 19 against Rouge et Noir in Ottawa.
