Tai, the Canadian comedian, is back in Guadeloupe

Tai, nicknamed the “Rising Star” of Canadian stand-up sport, is back on the Guadeloupe stage this Wednesday, August 9 at the Palais des Sports du Gosier. Meeting with the comedian of Haitian origin.

Scrolling on Instagram, TikTok or even Facebook, you’ve probably come across one of his videos, with the now iconic line: “Madame Rekilé”.

Tai, whose real name is Taïlaire Laguerre, has been navigating the unforgiving universe of social networks since he was 16, where he has managed to find a place for himself. While in custody, he hosted a live speed dating show on Instagram “Ohood cupping”, in other words, he played cupids for individual netizens. He reveals a concept that has had great success: “We were top trends on Twitter”. His agent then offers him to implement this program on stage.
At 19 he did his first show in Canada. A challenge for this content creator on social networks, because on stage, without a network, he has no margin for error.

You can’t afford to be annoying, you have to keep your cool. I was trained by a Haitian humorist in Montreal, she taught me how to move on stage and during breaks.

His character Jean-Robert is directly inspired by his father. The idea came to him the day he was going through his wardrobe. When Tai saw his striped shirts, oversized suits and shoes “Long as the Titanic”, he decided to keep her. And then the scenario of his first video “Madame Rekilé” fell on him like a hair on soup: “I took on my father’s costume and my mother had just bought him a new car, so I thought why not imitate the uncle who sells cars?“. Thus was born Jean-Robert, whose video received 1 million views in 5 hours.

Jean-Robert is an uncle, bitter, funny, clumsy and lovable.

This Wednesday, August 9, 2023, for the second time in his young career, Tai will face the Guadeloupean public that he particularly likes. And for good reason, Guadeloupe is the first territory outside of Canada where he has performed.

The first show in Guadeloupe was last year, it was my first time in front of 3,000 people.

Tai is a comedian who brings generations together across borders. It is mePart of his inspiration comes from his grandmother ” very funny” and the Haitian community to which he belongs. Both of these parents are Haitians, the comedian explains, as they grew up immersed in the country’s culinary and musical culture and learned to speak Creole. “It was important to my parents” assured the young man of 21 years.

I wanted to do a show in Haiti at the same time as Guadeloupe, but the situation in the country doesn’t allow it.

Tai says he regrets the political, security and humanitarian crises that are rocking Haiti. If the 21-year-old young man admits that he doesn’t know how to help the population, he is ready to support great initiatives. Tai is crossing his fingers that he could perform in his parents’ home country next December so he can give joy”, through his sketches.
