The president of Canada’s largest private sector union has criticized SNC-Lavalin for sacking the chairman of a union representing hundreds of its engineers and other workers.
Lana Payne, president of Unifor National, says SNC should rehire Mark Chudak, who ran the Society of Professional and Associate Engineers (SIPA) until he and another employee at the company’s Candu Energy subsidiary were fired last month after They have been accused of leaking confidential information to a third organization.
Lana Payne believes the decision, which she says is retaliation that amounts to anti-union behavior, will have an impact on labor relations and employee morale.
The statement follows a complaint filed by SIPA with the Canada Industrial Relations Board earlier this year that SNC managers monitored emails between the union and employees at Candu’s nuclear division.
In an interview on Friday, SNC CEO Ian Edwards said the employees in question, who were initially placed on administrative leave with pay, violated information security guidelines.
He added that unions are vital to the projects’ implementation and that he hopes the Montreal company and SIPA, which represents around 900 workers in Candu, will be able to regain a degree of mutual respect.
