Canada’s Vasek Pospisil defeated India’s Sumit Nagal in the first round of US Open qualifiers in New York on Wednesday night.
The 24th seedling of the qualifier prevailed in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-4 in a nearly two-hour match.
The Maple Leaf representative, ranked at No. 132 in the world, stole serve from his rival twice, once per set. He also showed tenacity by responding immediately to the 464th player in the ATP rankings when the latter broke him in the fourth game of the first engagement.
Pospisil ended his duel with a total of 13 aces and a success rate of 78% when he brought his first serve into play.
The Vernon, British Columbia native is attempting to make the main draw of the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the season for the tenth straight year. His best result of his career so far came at the 2020 US Open when he reached the fourth round of the prestigious event.
In the second and penultimate qualifying round, Pospisil meets Andreas Seppi. The two men have faced each other five times on the ATP Tour. So far, the Italian has held the upper hand with three wins.
