Nicolet’s RCM will finally retain its place in the name of its national equestrian sport. At the request of elected officials from the region, notably Nicolet Mayor Geneviève Dubois and Bloc MP Louis Plamondon, the Federal Commission on Electoral Boundaries decided to reconsider its decision.
In fact, the name Nicolet remains in the denomination and the name Alnôbak is added. Thus, riding becomes Bécancour-Nicolet-Saurel-Alnôbak.
Genevieve Dubois said to himself I rejoice that the Nicolet name will remain in the denomination
of horseback riding in a press release from the City of Nicolet.
In addition, the toponymy Alnôbak has since been prioritized instead of Odanak Replacing Odanak with the endonym Alnôbak, referring to members of the Abenaki First Nation (Waban-Aki), would respect the will of the community
reads the Commission’s report.
Last February, the commission announced that it intended to change the name of the constituency, replacing Nicolet with Alnôbak. This announcement had provoked violent reactions from Nicolet. The commission had said it wanted to make changes to the names to better reflect the presence of Aboriginal communities on Quebec territory.
I thought someone was pranking me… it’s so ridiculous [retirer] a name, from [retirer] an MRC of a city still celebrating its 350th anniversary, but finally I knew it was real.
