Ottawa – Retail sales in Canada rose 0.2% in May to $66 billion, Statistics Canada reported on Friday.
Sales increased in five out of nine sub-sectors, with the strongest gains being seen in auto and parts dealers and food retail.
Statistics Canada reports that retail sales rose in six provinces in May. The largest increases were in British Columbia, at 2.7%, and Alberta, at 2%.
In Quebec, retail sales fell 0.9%, led by 0.4% in the Montreal region. Sales in Ontario fell 0.6%, while sales in the Toronto area rose 0.9%.
On the other hand, e-commerce retail sales rose 2.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis to $3.7 billion in May and account for 5.6% of total retail sales, compared to 5.5% in April.
Statistics Canada produces a preliminary estimate of retail sales which suggests they were flat in June, but this figure is subject to revision.
